Volunteer at a Dog Shelter in Pattaya
We have discussed in previous blogs many of the exciting things you can do in Pattaya. Things like sky diving, scuba diving, ATV riding, Muay Thai or the vast array of restaurants to visit. The clubs and bars are world famous. But there are less well known things to do here, that are far more rewarding and fulfilling than most choices.
Thailand has millions of street dogs, and they live hard lives. You can often feel helpless when you see them, especially if they are injured or sick. You can’t take them all home. Well one man in Pattaya, a German by the name of Adrian, he does take them all home. He started Second Chance Dog Shelter in Pattaya, its home to about 90 dogs and about half are disabled from accidents and injury. Shelters in Thailand get no government funding, they all rely on donations to survive. Second Chance have a unique approach to fundraising. They offer courses run by professional trainers, that teach people how to train dogs. They use dogs at the shelter to practise with, if you can teach a 3 legged dog to do agility you can do anything.
The money from the courses help hugely with the running of the shelter. But it also gives the dogs a real positive impact on their life, they become more confident as they learn that not all people will hurt them. They actually become more adoptable. People are far more willing to adopt a dog that is friendly and sociable even if they deep down know the shy dog will come round in time. Learning obedience skills with the volunteers brings out the best in even the shyest of dogs.
So if you want to make a real impact during your time in Pattaya and at the same time learn real world dog training skills, these courses might be for you. You still get to go to the beach, its just now you get to take a dog with you !
Your trip to Thailand might be the beginning of an entirely new career. You will definitely have a life changing experience at Second Chance Dog Shelter in Pattaya. If you have a dog at home you will go back with a far deeper understanding of dogs, and you will be able to train your dog like a pro !
